The Green Bay Packers and Chicago Bears are one of the NFL’s greatest rivalries, if not the greatest rivalry in all of sports. And now the two historic teams are going to battle with a trip to the Super Bowl on the line.

2010 NFL Playoffs

Can Rodgers and co. push Green Bay past Chicago?

This hype-worthy matchup pits two young quarterbacks (Aaron Rodgers and Jay Cutler) against each other in a game that will no doubt heavily impact both of their careers. With both quarterback earning their first playoff victories in their careers in these 2010 NFL Playoffs, one of them will also earn their first trip to the most coveted stage of all.

The question is, which quarterback will make more plays, less mistakes, and has the supporting cast that can back them up? Read on for a full breakdown for both teams, as well as a prediction for this weekend’s outcome:

Why the Packers Will Win

Green Bay already had an explosive offense when they entered the playoffs. But once they unleashed rookie running back James Starks on the Philadelphia Eagles in the first round of the playoffs, they showed they could be a balanced attack, as well.

Starkes didn’t have nearly as much success against a stout Atlanta Falcons run defense last week, but Green Bay wisely committed to the run enough to allow Aaron Rodgers to do what he does best.

And after that, Tramon Williams and co. did the rest.

This is a team that can come at you in a number of ways, and even when the game is seemingly out of their hands, Aaron Rodgers and this explosive offense can get right back in it (See: Packers vs Cardinals in 2009 playoffs). Unlike 2009, however, Rodgers and company actually have a very stable and aggressive defense to support them. And unlike much of the 2010 regular season, they now have a balanced offense that can run or pass, depending on which they decide to do.

The truth is, despite the Bears splitting the season series, they really haven’t had a legitimate answer for Rodgers, and they also haven’t gotten a heavy dose of James Starks. If the Packers defense can make Jay Cutler player like the Cutler of old, Rodgers and the offense will surely do enough to put the Packers back into the Super Bowl for the first time since 1997.

Three Keys to Success

1. Strike Early

2. Rattle Jay Cutler

3. Establish the Run

Green Bay knows Chicago, but in the playoffs, knowing your opponent often means absolutely nothing. All Green Bay can do is do what they do best: play methodical offense and go for the big play when it presents itself. Chicago stifled the Seattle Seahawks ground game last week, so Green Bay needs to make an extra effort to jump out to a lead early. This will put Cutler and the Bears on their heals, and should allow the Packers to run the ball more effectively.

Striking first is ideal. But even if that doesn’t happen, and we don’t see a 48-point explosion like we did against Atlanta, the Packers still have the defensive personnel to make life a living hell for Cutler. Above all else, the biggest thing for Green Bay is to control the tempo of this game. If they can do it by air (and they can), they can still win, but they will need to commit to their ground game to win, even if it means struggling like they did against Atlanta.

This is a dog fight, and the basics still have to count for something. And that’s exactly what the Packers will have to rely on to get the win on the road.

Why the Bears Will Win

2010 NFL Playoffs

Can Cutler get the Bears to the Super Bowl?

The Bears already ridded of the one-and-done notion, and Jay Cutler was flawless in his first playoff win of his career. However, he’ll have to be even more on top of his game against a Packers defense that has had his number in his two seasons with the Bears. While Chicago escaped with a win earlier in the year, Cutler wasn’t playing on an elite level then, and he certainly wasn’t playing at a high level in their Week 17 loss to the Packers.

Regardless, Cutler can play at an elite level. If he takes care of the ball and takes what Green Bay is willing to give him, it should be enough to help control the clock and get Matt Forte going. Chicago’s still under-rated defense should be able to keep the game close and low-scoring if Cutler can manage to play, well, less like himself in year’s past.

If it gets down to the final minutes and it’s a defensive battle, the edge goes to the home-team Bears. With Lovie Smith saying from day one as head coach of the Bears that objective A was always to beat Green Bay, there’s no doubt he’ll have his team prepared to do that very thing again this weekend.

Three Keys to Success

1. Get to Aaron Rodgers Early

2. Protect the Football

3. Control the Clock

I’m not sure if Rodgers can actually get rattled, but if he can, the Bears defense has the talent to make it happen. However, even if they can’t force Rodgers into uncharacteristic mistakes, they still can control their side of the ball by limiting turnovers and controlling field position.

Chicago’s main concern has to be keeping Cutler on his feet and limiting his attempts, while establishing the run and grinding it out against a Green Bay run defense that can wear down when being pounded at with a ground game. Matt Forte has only been adequate against the Packers in two meetings this season, and will have to raise his level of play to make it 2-1 against the Packers in the third contest.

The brunt of the responsibility in the second and third key will be on the offensive line. The battles in many playoff games are won in the trenches, and Chicago will have to out-muscle Green Bay’s front line in both the passing and running game to move onto the next round.

Overall, these are two very evenly matched teams. Both defense can cause problems for all aspects of the opposing offense, and both offenses can make big plays. This game comes down to turnovers and field position. With Devin Hester as a huge potential X-factor, Green Bay may have their hands full in the battle of field position. However, there is no doubt who either team would rather have suiting up at quarterback.

In a defensive divisonal battle with the season on the line, you pick the red-hot team with the quarterback who is less likely to throw the season away.

Verdict: Packers 24, Bears 20

The Steelers rank first in rushing defense allowing only 60.1 yards per game and 23rd in passing defense allowing 232.9 yards per game. The Steeler passing defense is far better than that ranking indicates as many of these yards were given up long after the game was won. Pittsburgh Steelers safety Troy Polamalu, who re-injured his lower leg in last Sunday’s 23-7 victory over the Cincinnati Bengals, is not expected to play in Week 15 against the New York Jets, according to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

New York Jets vs. Pittsburgh Steelers preview, prediction – New York New York Jets |

After originally sustaining the lower leg injury in November, the five-time Pro Bowler played through the ailment. However, Polamalu re-aggravated the injury while returning a first half interception 45 yards for a touchdown against the Bengals.Troy Polamalu is a huge reason the first-place Steelers have a one-game lead over Baltimore in the AFC North.

Pittsburgh hopes the offense can also chip in from time to time. The unit may receive a boost with tight end Heath Miller set to return after missing the Bengals game with a concussion. Still, Ben Roethlisberger has thrown only one touchdown pass in his last three games, and running back Rashard Mendenhall has cracked the 100-yard mark once in his last 10.

The Pittsburgh Steelers rank 18th in passing offense gaining 212.2 yards per game and rank 10th in rushing offense gaining 120.2 yards per game. The Jets are quite similar ranking 20th in passing offense gaining 207 yards per game and rank 6th in rushing offense gaining 143.7 yards per game.

driven the “how good is Big Ben?” debate into the ground

One of the main concerns facing the Jets is the position of right tackle. Last month against the Texans, Damien Woody injured his knee after falling on it and having it bent backwards. Woody chose to play through the pain and played as best he could against the Bengals and Patriots. Earlier this week on Nov. 14, it was diagnosed that Woody had partially torn his MCL in the knee he injured against the Texans.New York Jets vs Pittsburgh Steelers Live (Sunday Night Week 15) Online Kick off HD TV Feed Ustream

NFL Football-National Football League (US) 2011

Offensive Line The Pittsburgh offensive line has been under scrutiny all year and for good reason. Their franchise quarterback was hitting the ground far too much. While that might have been fine against teams like the Browns, Panthers, and Bengals, the Ravens were a whole different animal (literally).

Against a fierce pass rush the line performed decently, although Terrell Suggs made life miserable for Big Ben coming around the corner. However, when the big moment arrived in the game, the offensive unit gave Roethlisberger the time he needed to march the Steelers down the field.

The task does not get any easier this week, since Rex Ryan will be counting on defensive line pressure and exotic blitz packages that will require solid communication and adjustments. Rookie center Maurkice Pouncey will have to continue to play like a 10-year vet if the Steelers want to move the ball successfully.

The Jets offensive line, possibly the best in football last year, also struggled a bit earlier in the season. However, Rex Ryan called his line out in the week leading up the Week 15 Pittsburgh match-up, and they definitely responded.

The Jets would definitely have the advantage here if not for one factor that could really hurt them. Star tackle Damien Woody tore his Achilles tendon against the Colts and was subsequently placed on IR. He was one of the main reasons why Sanchez’s jersey stayed so clean in the Week 15 game and his loss hurts more than the Jets would like to admit.

So, it’s going to be up to replacement Wayne Hunter to pick up the slack and block the relentless Pittsburgh linebackers. Will he be up to the challenge? Only time will tell.

Tight Ends: Heath Miller Vs. Dustin Keller Here is yet another match-up where the two teams seem eerily similar. Keller had 13 catches and 150 yards more than Miller but also played in two more games. Both guys are consistent red zone threats and block well on running plays.

Miller did have a touchdown catch against the Ravens but was held somewhat in check other than that while Keller was limited to three catches in the Jets victory against the Patriots, so both have been underwhelming recently.

Neither Keller or Heath is going to stretch the field on you or catch the ball and run for 60 yards in this game. However, Keller did catch five of Mark Sanchez’s 17 touchdowns during the regular season, proving himself to be a solid red zone guy. Miller had only two TDs in the regular season and both came against Cleveland.

Miller missed the Week 15 game against the Jets, which some Steelers fans have point to as the reason their team did not score on their final drive (replacement Matt Spaeth had two drops). If he can be a factor this week might decide who goes to the Super Bowl.

Defensive Line This match-up here, I believe, will decide the game.

The Jets must get pressure with their defensive line if they want to contain Ben Roethlisberger. If they have to rely on blitzing corners and cover guys, they are in for a long day.

Shaun Ellis will have to get in Ben’s face and the defensive ends are going to have to play contain contain contain. Roethlisberger hurts you most when he moves outside the pocket or dodges a blitz and has time to make a play out of nothing. They should be able to stop the Steelers run attack, so containing Big Ben should be priority number one.

The Steelers D-line is coming off a great game against the Ravens. In fact, the entire defense played amazing, allowing only 126 yards of offense on 53 plays, which is almost unheard of in the playoffs.

There are rumors circulating around Pittsburgh that Aaron Smith will be practicing and is trying to play in the game Sunday. The only problem with that is Ziggy Hood is finally maturing into the defensive end the Steelers thought he could be with five tackles and a sack of Joe Flacco last week. Do you risk sitting a young guy who is playing well for a vet who has just come off the injury report?

Like the Jets, the Steelers should contain the running attack as usual but they will have to knock the Sanchize around and keep the ball out of the hands of Holmes and Edwards.

Linebackers Make no mistake about it, this Pittsburgh unit is the best linebacking corps in the league. Their dominance against Baltimore last week only confirmed that and rest assured the four starters will be ready come Sunday.

James Harrison and Lamarr Woodley will be rushing the passer as usual and replacement tackle Wayne Hunter is going to have his hands full all day long. If the Steelers can take advantage of the Damien Woody injury, Mark Sanchez might be running for his life all game.

On the other side, New York’s David Harris had an awesome game against New England last week with 12 total tackles and a 58-yard INT of golden boy Tom Brady. If he can pull a big play out of his hat against Pittsburgh, it could decide the game.

Bart Scott isn’t the pass rushing threat he was in Baltimore, but he can still get the QB very quickly and will have the ball on the ground before you know what hit you.

The NY linebackers are no slouches but, unfortunately for them, there isn’t a unit better than the Steelers right now.

Advantage: Steelers

Defensive Backs This is where things get really interesting…

Darrelle Revis is without question one of the best cover corners in the league and the former Pitt star will absolutely shut down half the field on most days. Antonio Cromartie is a big, physical guy who can bump receivers off their routes and give the pass rush time to get to the QB.

The interesting part will be the match-ups that Rex Ryan chooses to use. Will he have Revis shadow the number one (Ward) or will he choose to try to shut down speedster Mike Wallace?

It was very obvious against the Patriots that Tom Brady had absolutely no one to throw to all day long and that changed the game massively. Will the Steelers, with three of their WRs being under 25, be able to find space against a great Jets secondary? It’s tough, but it can be done.

The other interesting factor will be that Polamalu will be playing in this game as opposed to the Week 15 match-up. Troy is coming off a very lackluster game against the Ravens where he whiffed on two open field tackles, a rarity indeed. He certainly will be spending extra time in the film room this week, and I have confidence we won’t see a repeat performance.

At the corners, Bryant McFadden left last week’s game with an injury but is expected to play. However, if he can’t go, that forces William Gay into the number two spot and Anthony Madison into the nickle spot. Watching last week, it was painfully obvious that Madison was the weak link out there, so Steelers fans better hope that McFadden can go.

Special Teams The unquestioned big play in the Week 15 game between these two teams was Brad Smith taking the opening kickoff for a touchdown. If the Steelers expect to win on Sunday, they absolutely cannot let that happen again.

With Smith slowed by a groin injury, CB Antonio Cromartie has filled in as kick returner and has actually done a great job in relief. Smith claims that he could have played last week against the Patriots but Ryan sat him down. It will be interesting to see who is back deep when the Steelers line up to kick.

Steelers kicker Shaun Suisham showed why he was available midway through the season and it’s not because he is Adam Vinatieri. Suisham missed a makeable field goal against the Ravens, continuing his career postseason woes.

Not to mention the Steelers kick coverage, which again gave up a big play last week, allowing the Ravens a long opening kickoff return. Only a tackle by Shaun Suisham and a red challenge flag kept Baltimore from starting the game at midfield. The Steelers will likely be missing special-teams ace Will Allen, so other players are going to have to step up.

Coaching: Mike Tomlin Vs. Rex Ryan No, there aren’t going to be any foot jokes in here, sorry. I’ve heard enough of them already.

The bottom line is that Rex Ryan is one hell of a coach. He came into New York running his mouth but backed that up with two AFC title game appearances. Ryan will definitely focus his defensive gameplan on stopping Ben Roethlisberger, something he struggled with as defensive coordinator of the Ravens.

Mike Tomlin already has a Super Bowl ring and has his team positioned for another. While he may have wasted both replay challenges too early last week, he kept his team together facing a 14-point deficit and they rallied for a comeback.

The one thing that concerns me: Did both coaches exhaust themselves emotionally against their biggest rivals last week? Which guy will be able to focus his team and reach the ultimate prize?

Prediction The one thing that should concern the Jets is the Steelers defense. New England’s D had been playing above their talent level for a long time, and it finally caught up with them last week. The Steelers have a much better defensive football unit than the Patriots, and the Jets have to be ready for them.

Just like the Steelers-Ravens game last week, this one is going to come down to the quarterbacks. Will the Jets be able to blanket the Steelers receivers as they did last week against the Patriots? Can Sanchez make the tough throws against a secondary that has Troy Polamalu in it? Which defensive line will get more pressure on the quarterback?

Last week, all the “experts” picked a low-scoring Pittsburgh/Baltimore game and a blowout in the New England/New York game. They were wrong on both counts.

So what happens here? Everyone seems to be pointing to a low-scoring affair with one or two big plays deciding who heads to Dallas.

I’m going to go the opposite way and say that one team will game plan just a little bit better than the other. The difference will come down to touchdowns vs. field goals in the red zone, and I think the Steelers D is just too much for the Sanchize to handle.

Don’t be mistaken though, the Jets are a very, very good football team

Just let me start out by saying that this blog will deal completely with Sunday’s game between the Jets and Steelers at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh. There will be no mention of the on-going “Trip-Gate” saga with regards to suspended Jets Strength and Conditioning Coach Sal Alosi.

I will not be discussing how the Jets went from just suspending him for the rest of the season and fining him $25,000 before uncovering “new information”. Since the Jets have now determined that Alosi ordered inactive players to form a wall on the sidelines during punt returns, I will not be delving into the fact that the Jets have now suspended Alosi indefinitely pending further review and I won’t be telling you that the Jets are coming off as complete frauds because the feeling is that Alosi didn’t come up with this plan on his own.

I also promise not to get into the fact that the NFL is now investigating the matter nor will I reiterate my feelings that Alosi should have been fired for his actions. That is unless the Jets instructed the behavior and the sideline plan and are simply making Alosi the fall guy for yet another embarrassing black mark on the franchise.

Okay, now that I have that out of the way, let’s get down to some football.

Having lost two in a row, the Jets bring a 9-4 record into Heinz Field for a meeting with the 10-3 Steelers. It’s a tough challenge and the players know it.

“I’ve played these guys a bunch and they’re always good against the run,” said Ladainian Tomlinson of the Steelers who boast the NFL’s number one ranked rushing defense. “It doesn’t change, but we have a good offensive line. I think everybody knows that. We have to come ready to play. We have to challenge them just like they’re going to challenge us, and the best man will win.”

Tomlinson is on the verge of another milestone. He leads the Jets with 49 receptions this season and with one catch against the Steelers, Tomlinson would become the third running back in NFL history to record at least 50 receptions in nine seasons.

This game is not without its fair share of storylines including a pair of homecomings.

First, Aliquippa, PA native Darrelle Revis returns to the stadium where he played college football for the University of Pittsburgh. He knows what the Jets have to do in order to escape with a victory.

“A lot of focus and a sense of urgency for this game,” said Revis who needed thirty tickets for family and friends. “We have to come out of there with a win. We know it’s going to be a hostile environment and we’re going to see all the Terrible Towels and those types of things. The field, I played there in college, is one of the roughest fields in the NFL, so we have to make sure we take care of our footing out there. It’s going to be a hostile environment, so we have to come out of there with a win.”

Revis expects to play despite suffering a hamstring injury in practice on Thursday.

Let’s be honest, do you think there is anyway that Revis will not be on the field in his backyard?

No way!

Also returning to Heinz Field is former Steelers wide receiver Santonio Holmes. Acquired by the Jets during the off-season for a fifth round pick, Holmes was the Super Bowl XLIII MVP as a member of the Steelers. He’s not sure what to expect in terms of his emotions.

“I honestly don’t know,” said Holmes. “Right now, I’m focused on the (plan) that we put in this week, how we’re going to practice, how we’re going to prepare for this week and I’ll let all the emotions out come Sunday.”

Holmes and the rest of the Jets offense will be looking to get things on track after failing to score a touchdown in each of the last two games. Mark Sanchez has taken a lot of the responsibility for that, but the Jets’ second year quarterback is confident that things will change, albeit against an outstanding Steelers defense.

“Absolutely,” said Sanchez. “It’s going to be a big challenge for us. I know their defense is one of the toughest in the league, so that’s always good. We need to play our best and it’s about time we started playing at our best, so it’s a good opportunity for us. We just need to be more efficient, that’s for sure. (We need to) take care of the football, get completions early and often in the passing game and (we) have to get the running game going a little bit. It’ll be a good challenge because they’re a great front-seven, their back end does a great job as well, so it’s a good team to challenge us and we’re ready for that.”

The Jets will be taking on that challenge without starting right tackle Damien Woody who underwent surgery on his right knee this week. Wayne Hunter will get the start in his place. The Jets will also be without safety Eric Smith because of a concussion.

Gang Green might be battered, bruised, and reeling, but they still have some work to do if they plan on making the playoffs.

“This is the home stretch in December,” said wide receiver Jerricho Cotchery. “We’re talking about making a run and these are the games that you have to win.”

The Jets’ playoff scenario is chronicled below, but suffice it to say that the Jets will probably have to win two of the last three games to punch a ticket to the post-season.

But, winning on Sunday in Pittsburgh will not be easy.

“I know one thing,” said head coach Rex Ryan. “We’re heading to Pittsburgh and that’s a tough place to play. It’s as tough as it gets, going against as good a defense as there is, going against a great quarterback (Ben Roethlisberger), a proven two-time Super Bowl-winning quarterback. They have explosive receivers. It’s going to be a battle. If you plan on beating Pittsburgh, you have to bring it all and that’s what we’re planning on bringing.”
The Jets may also want to bring a rabbit’s foot, a four leaf clover, a horseshoe, or anything else that can get their luck shifted in the right direction. This is a monumental task for a team that is in a bad way right now.

THE SERIES

The Steelers lead the all-time regular season series 15-3 and are 6-0 against the Jets in Pittsburgh. The last meeting came in 2007 when the Jets beat the Steelers 19-16 in overtime at Giants Stadium. The last regular season meeting between these two teams in Pittsburgh was a 17-6 win by the Steelers in 2004. The Jets and Steelers also met in the AFC Divisional Playoff following the 2004 season and the Steelers prevailed 20-17 in overtime.

Yes, that was the game in which Doug Brien missed a pair of potential game winning field goals in the fourth quarter.

THE PLAYOFF PICTURE

Because the Chargers won on Thursday night, the Jets chances of clinching a playoff spot this week are very limited. According to the NFL, the Jets need a win over the Steelers coupled with a Dolphins loss or tie, a Colts loss or tie, and a Chiefs loss.

There are other scenarios in which the Jets may clinch a playoff spot if they clinch the strength of victory tiebreaker over certain teams this weekend.

Okay, it’s prediction time. This is a tough spot for the Jets and I just find it hard to believe that they can get come out of Pittsburgh with a win. It’s not because they’ve never won there, but rather because of the state of the team right now.

Steelers 20 Jets 6

That’s it for now. Enjoy the game!

The 2-0 Chicago Bears will host the undefeated Green Bay Packers at Soldier Field this coming Monday night on Monday Night Football. The Bears beat theCowboys last Sunday in Dallas 27-20 while the Packers defeated the Buffalo Bills 34-7.

Both of these teams are known for their high powered offenses (which is very unusual for the Bears to have) as well as strong opportunistic defenses. This is the perfect matchup for a Monday night game and promises to be one of the best games in this long and storied rivalry.

So who will win and take the lead in the NFC North? Which of these two teams has the edge? Let’s find out in this in-depth game review of the Bears versus the Packers on Monday Night Football.

When the Bears have the Ball : -

The Bears have had a lot of good luck on offense so far this season and many people wonder when or if their luck will run out. The offensive line hasn’t been playing its best football and as we have seen it has a direct effect on how well the rest of the offense plays.

So how well will the offensive line play against the Packers? First, let’s look at whether or not left tackle Chris Williams is going to play. As of this writing, the Bears have listed Williams as probable on the injury report and ball signs point to him playing this Sunday. Is that a good thing?

We all know that Williams has struggled with pass rushers this season and with outside linebacker Clay Matthews (who has six sacks coming into this game) next on the agenda, do the Bears really want Williams in there?

The line combination that they came up with against the Cowboys (after Williams went out with an injury) seemed to work pretty well against the Cowboys pass rush. Will they use this same combination again (shifting Frank Omiyale from right tackle to left tackle and Kevin Shafer to right tackle)?

That remains to be seen but the Bears will do everything in their power to be sure that quarterback Jay Cutler has enough protection to avoid getting hit or sacked and has enough time to throw the ball.

Using the running backs and tight ends to chip defenders will probably be the rule in this game. If they can just delay Matthews or anyone else that rushes Cutler for a little bit, he will have time to get his passes off and make some plays.

Speaking of Cutler, Cutler has thrown for a lot of yards the past two weeks and as he gets better, his receivers get better and the passing game will get even more deadly. In this game, the Bears are not only going to have to deal with a strong pass rush from the Packers front seven but they are also going to have to deal with a strong secondary that can make plays.

So far this season, the Packers secondary has generated a total of two interceptions but this ball hawking secondary can create turnovers at opportune times so both the Bear’s wide receiver and Cutler have to be wary of their presence and not allow them opportunities to make plays. Good route running and speed will help get them there and the Bears need that in order to win this game.

What has been missing most from the Bear’s offense so far this season? The running game. The Bears have had to sit in tight games with the Lions and the Cowboys because they haven’t been able to run the ball and control the clock and if they want to beat the Packers, this has got to change.

Look for the Bears to try to establish the run early in order to keep the Packers offense off the field and keep the ball and the clock working in their favor.

But even if the Bears attempt to run the ball can they do it against the Packers? The Packers are allowing around 130 yards per game on the ground so the Bears, if they can block for it, should be able to get their running game going against Green Bay.

Both running backs Matt Forte and Chester Taylor are certainly up to the task. If the Bears can get both established early and often and can keep the run game going then this game could be one that the Bears win.

Finally, the tight ends, in particular Greg Olsen, made a pretty strong showing in the Bear’s game against the Cowboys and it would be wise if the Bears could utilize Olsen again. Throwing the ball over the middle of the Packers defense may pay dividends for the Bears in the passing game.

When the Packers have the Ball : -

After years of having one of the best quarterbacks in the NFL at the helm in Brett Favre, it looks as if the Packers never skipped a beat with Aaron Rodgers manning the position now.

Rodgers has had a solid two games so far this season (throwing 60 passes with 38 completions for a total of 443 yards with four touchdowns and two interceptions. He has also been sacked twice) and has the ability and the weapons to strike anywhere on the field quickly. What can the Bears do to stop Rodgers?

First, the have to get pressure on him. Rodgers has been sacked just twice in two games which means he’s either getting some good protection from his offensive line or he’s getting rid of the ball in a hurry. The Bears will have to turn up the heat on Rodgers and they can do it if they can get a pass rush. The number one guy that needs to get a strong pass rush going against Rodgers is Julius Peppers.

Peppers had a decent game against the Lions, fell off a little bit against the Cowboys (although he was getting double teamed) and now needs to rise up and get some pressure on Rodgers.

If the Bears defensive front can get pressure, that will free up the linebackers to make plays in the passing game. We know that the cover two requires that the linebackers drop back into coverage at times and we saw middle linebacker Brian Urlacher and outside linebacker Lance Briggs do it against the Cowboys last week so having the defensive line taking care of things up front will make a huge difference.

Speaking of the linebackers, both Briggs and Urlacher have been playing like All-Pros through the first two weeks of the season and they are a big reason as to why the Bears have been strong against opponents running games.

After losing Ryan Grant to an injury, the Packers now have Brandon Jackson in as their starter at the position. So far, Jackson has rushed for a total of 92 yards so far this season which isn’t much by any standard. Hopefully the Bears will be able to shut him down in this game.

Right now, the top receiver on Green Bay is Jermichael Finley. Finley has a total of 150 yards for the Packers so far this season and is a favorite receiver of Rodgers. The Bears will need to make sure that he is covered at all times and doesn’t burn them like so many receivers have done in the past.

The problem is, if they shut Finley down, they have to deal with guys like Greg Jennings and Donald Driver as well. The Packers offense is loaded with options.

The Bears will rely on their safeties to cover as well as their linebackers (in the middle of the field and in short areas) and this has been effective for the most part over the past two games. The secondary will have to be on top of things as well because one slip up (see last year’s first game against the Packers) and Green Bay could take full advantage of the error. This game has to be played mistake free in the secondary.

Analysis : -

The Bears are playing good football on both sides of the ball but even though many felt that they would be tested by the Cowboys, their first real test of the season will come against the Packers this Monday night. Not only are the Packers a solid team on both sides of the ball but they have the ability to strike quickly and build up a big lead before letting their defense tee off and take care of things.

But as the Packers are a good team and they have won two games, you have to look at the two teams that they have played. In their first game of the season, the Packers faced the Philadelphia Eagles and after they had them blown out, the Eagles began to creep back and had there been more time on the clock, the Eagles would have probably tied that game.

In their second game, against the Buffalo Bills, they did handle the Bills well but keep in mind, this is a Buffalo team with a lot of issues in almost every facet of the game and no one expects them to win a lot of games this season.

Perhaps some people may say the same about the Bears. First, they beat a traditionally weak Lions team and then took on a Cowboys team that isn’t playing like they have before.

But the Bears ability to beat these teams through the air, limit their mistakes (against the Cowboys) and overcome their mistakes (against the Lions) has made them a much better team than they have been in the last few seasons. If they can pass the test and beat the Packers, the Bears can be considered a real contender in the league.

The game has to be played first, however, and the Bears have a lot of work to do in order to win the game. Their offensive line has to be on top of things in this game not only to protect Cutler but to also help open up some holes in the running game. The Bears rushing attack has been horrid the first two weeks of the season and if they can’t get it going against the Packers then there could be problems.

If Cutler can get time to throw the ball then the Bears have a chance to complete a lot of passes this Monday night. Expect Cutler to try to stretch the field using Knox and Hester down deep to try to keep the Packers defense off balance. If the Bears can get their running game going, expect them to use play action a lot as well.

The Packers quick strike offense can be contained and with a strong pass rush the Bears defense can keep them under control. If Peppers is looking for a “break out” game as a Bear, this is the game for him.

He can use his skill, speed and ability to work through the Packers offensive line and get some pressure on Rodgers and hopefully sack him. The Bears need a strong showing out of Peppers in this game.

The Bears linebackers and secondary will have a big job ahead of them in this game but they will be up for the challenge. As long as they can limit mistakes and cover well they should be able to contain Green Bay’s offense. The Packers running game should not be too big of a factor as the Bears defense is strong against the run and should be able to keep Jackson contained.

This game could be won or lost on special teams and after having several good seasons on special teams, the Bears are suffering from some breakdowns on their coverage units. Their punt coverage team (allowing a return for touchdown in Dallas last week) along with the kickoff coverage units have been allowing some significant return yardage.

Hopefully, special teams coach Dave Toub will be able to get this unit on the right track so that the Bears don’t miss something and cost the team the game.

Prediction : -

Traditionally, Bears/Packers games are always tough games to predict. Both teams have been fairly even in the series since head coach Lovie Smith took over as head coach and with the improvements that these two teams have made, this could be a pretty close game. It should also be one of the more exciting games to watch in recent series history.

The team that is able to pass the ball the best and not make mistakes will win this game. It will clearly come down to turnovers so whoever has the least wins.

The Bears are a great team and are definitely headed in the right direction. Look for them to win this game by a slim margin, go to 3-0 and take over the lead in the NFC North.

Detailed analysis & preview of both the NFC (Green Bay at Chicago) & AFC (New York at Pittsburgh) Championship games, including game predictions and picks.

NFL NFC ChampionshipWhen the 2011 NFL playoffs began there were 12 teams, and now just four remain. And Chicago, Green Bay, Pittsburgh and New York will lock horns on Sunday, January 23rd, 2011 in the AFC and NFC Championship games to determine who will advance to Super Bowl XLV. A detailed preview of both championship games is provided below, including predictions and picks for both match ups.

A huge Steeler Nation salute to first-year special teams coach Al Everest for the work he's done helping transform the Pittsburgh special teams from one of the worst in the NFL last year, to a group that fared well in just about every phase of STs in 2010. After two solid months to start the year, I wrote that Everest was already deserving of a raise, as the improvements covering kickoffs played a big role in why the team got off to a solid start despite missing their franchise quarterback for the first quarter of the season. The Steelers finished with an overall ST DVOA ranking of 16th this year; last year they were 30th. The biggest difference has been the vast improvement covering kickoffs. In '09, the Steelers were historically bad. Like, maybe the worst in NFL history, and definitely the worst ever through the first three months of a season.

This year they've been much better, though they're still in the bottom third of the league according to FO's DVOA metrics. By traditional yards per return allowed though, the Steelers finished 5th at an even 20 yards per kickoff return. Frankly, those FO metrics don't tell the whole story of how much better they've been. Considering the lack of booming kickoffs by Jeff Reed and Sean Suisham, I'd say they've done just dandy.

However, Pittsburgh's final special teams stats would have been even better if not for a collectively poor performance against the New York Jets in Week 15. The Steelers allowed a TD on the game's opening return, which I took a closer look at yesterday. The ST shortcomings didn't end there unfortunately. Pittsburgh didn't punt the ball well, and they were unable to make a big splash play of their own in the return game. Let's take a closer look at just how decisively New York won the third phase of the game that day, and how it played an integral role in the Jets leaving Heinz Field with an important December road win.

Average starting field position

Steelers: 22 yard line

Jets: 30 yard line

Drives started from inside own 20

Steelers: 3

Jets: 0

Punting stats

Steve Weatherford : 4 punts, 36.8 average, 3 downed inside 20, long 52

Jeremy Kapinos: 4 punts, 38 average, 0 downed inside 20, long 44

Since I gave Kapinos some love in a recent column, I don't feel too bad when I say that he was not good at all against the Jets. Kapinos had three opportunities to pin the Jets deep inside their own 5-10 yard line. The first was a 4th-and-2 from the Jets 45 in the 1st quarter; the second came on the Steelers very next possession on a 4th and 2 from the Jets 34; and finally, the last came on a 4th-and-8 from the PIT 41 with about 7 minutes in the fourth quarter and the Jets up by 3. Kapinos whiffed on all three attempts. The first two were definitely hard to stomach...total chip shots. The third was a tougher situation to pin deep, but in that instance, the Steelers needed a clutch punt and didn't get it. The Jets started from the 24 yard line rather than pinned deep. The difference in field position there was huge, as the Jets were able to pick up a few first downs and then pin Pittsburgh inside its own 5 yard line with not much time remaining. That difference in field position led to the safety that made a last-minute comeback harder to achieve. After the game, I wondered why Coach Tomlin was not more aggressive and not go for at least one of those fourth-and-short situations inside New York territory. But I suppose if Kapinos had executed like Tomlin expected him to, hindsight would have been different.

Kickoff Returns

Steelers: 5 returns, 72 total yards, 14.4 average

Jets: 5 returns, 145 total yards, 29 average, 1 TD

Obviously Brad Smith's 97-yard TD return to start the game was a huge difference maker in the outcome. That's actually a fairly low average for NY considering they took one to the house, but A. Cromartie's -6 yard return following the fourth quarter safety certainly hurt the average.
As for the Steelers....well, not a good day returning kickoffs for Antonio Brown (M. Moore had one ho-hum return as well). Yards and points may be hard to come by on Sunday, so it's imperative to bring that return average up closer to the team's season average of 23.5 yards/return.

AFC Championship Game :-

The 2011 NFL American Football Conference Championship game features Rex Ryan and the New York Jets at the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers edged the Ravens in a tough divisional game, and the Jets come into the AFC Championship game following a revenge win over New England in Foxborough. This match up will probably showcase the defenses, as both of these teams rely on defense first. That said, both offenses are firing on all cylinders right now, and Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger's solid performances have returned him to good graces with the coaching staff and fans. Jets quarterback Mark Sanchez has come into his own in the latter half of this season, and he has a lot more talent in the skill positions (WR Braylon Edwards, WR Santonio Holmes, and RB LaDanian Tomlinson) to work with this year.

Look for Rex Ryan to have drawn up some exotic blitz packages to keep Roethlisberger from getting into a rhythm, and in the second half also look for the Jets D to line up in the same formation to try and get the QB to change the play and then call off the blitz. Don't expect too much blitzing from either side in the first quarter though, neither one of these coaches want to give up an early score.

You know there will be many hard hits in this game, and it could go either way, but my gut says go with the Jets as they are just a little more hungry and that might give them a slight edge.

NFC Championship Game :-

The 2011 National Football Conference Championship game pits the Green Bay Packers against the Chicago Bears at Soldier Field Sunday evening. This conference final matches up two NFC North rivals for the the third go round this season, and these teams know each other well. Green Bay quarterback Aaron Rodgers has emerged from the shadow of Brett Favre, and is playing as well as anyone in the league right now. The Packers defense has improved dramatically over the last few weeks, and is playing an aggressive, disruptive style but with discipline. The Bears always play in your face defense, and they shut out Seattle for almost a full three quarters in their last game. Chicago's offense revolves around QB Jay Cutler who has been up and down all season, but he seems to be in good form right now.

Expect to see Aaron Rodgers come out throwing for the Packers. The Bears play very good run defense, and aside from rookie RB James Starks' recent breakout Green Bay has not a had a particularly good running attack all year. Look for as more balanced attack from Jay Cutler and Chicago as they are more committed to the run game, but the Packers D seems to get better every week, so the Bears better have a Plan B.

Winning or losing generally boils down to making plays at this point in the playoffs, and given the Pack is clearly peaking right now, let's go with the hot team and take Green Bay to move on to Super Bowl XLV.

Packers-Bears Preview

Football’s oldest rivalry has a grand new prize: a spot in the Super Bowl. A Super Bowl berth is at stake in the Soldier Field

The Bears’ 35-24 dismantling of the overmatched Seattle Seahawks on Sunday sets up the biggest game in their 90-year series with the Packers. Chicago and Green Bay will play for the 182nd time next Sunday, but their first meeting for the NFC title.

Bears QB Jay Cutler ran for two touchdowns and threw for two more for their 35-24 victory Sunday afternoon.

Green Bay Packers reaches to the NFC Conference championship title game by stunning NFC’s top seed Atlanta Falcons, 48-21, in their Divisional Playoff game.

Aaron Rodgers threw three touchdown passes and ran for another score for their second straight postseason road victory. Rodgers completed 31 of 36 passes for 366 yards, more than Brett Favre — the guy he replaced in Green Bay — ever threw for in a playoff game.

The Packers lost to the Bears 33-14 at Wrigley Field on Dec. 14, 1941 in their only previous playoff meeting. Green Bay beat Chicago 10-3 in the season finale to clinch a playoff spot
earlier this month. The Packers haven’t been to the Super Bowl since the 1997 season, when they lost to Denver.
